Virology

Cell culture can be used to detect infectious viruses present in a sample.

At BC CAHS, two fish cell lines, CHSE (Chinook Salmon Embyonic), and EPC (Epithelioma papulosum cyprini) are exposed to salmonid tissue samples and observed microscopically for CPE (cytopathic effect); an indicator of the presence of an infectious virus.

If CPE is observed we employ a highly sensitive, and specific, molecular biology diagnostic assay called RT-qPCR to verify the presence of two viruses harmful to salmonid fishes; IHNV (Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis virus) and VHSV (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus).
