Cell culture assays are highly sensitive and can detect the smallest amounts of virus in a sample. At BC CAHS, 2 cell lines (CHSE and EPC) are used for detection of viruses.

The presence of virus is initially detected by observing cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell culture using virus isolation methods.  Positive results are verified using molecular methods.

Applications: While result turn-around time is longer than for PCR based methods, the cell culture assay is considered the ‘gold standard’ in the aquaculture industry for virus detection.
