Cell culture assays are highly sensitive and can be used to detect the smallest amount of virus present in a sample. At BC CAHS two fish cell lines, CHSE (Chinook Salmon Embyonic), and EPC (Epithelioma papulosum cyprini) are used for detection of two types of viruses, IHNv (Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis virus) and VHSv  (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus).

These viruses (IHNV and VHSV) can be detected by observing CPE (cytopathic effect) in cell culture of CHSE and EPC.

In order to further verify the presence of these two viruses (IHNv and VHSv) RT-qPCR can be used.
