There will be many activities happening at the Discovery Pier on Saturday, June 7, when Campbell River celebrates Oceans Day. This fun-filled and free family oriented event takes place in the parking lot next to the Maritime Heritage Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences has looked after overall organization of Oceans Day for the second year in a row, and the manager of the Discovery Passage Aquarium, Lidia Davidovics, took on coordinating the event.

“We are excited about all the participants who have come forward this year,” says Lidia. “We have Heather Gordon-Murphy’s group the Raincoast Creative Performing Arts returning, and new this year is Lutini the magician who will appear on stage. He will also stroll through the crowd afterwards.”

Oceans Day celebrates our living oceans and all the creatures that inhabit it. It also celebrates the working coast; commercial fishing, logging and aquaculture, and looking at the sea as a place of recreation for boaters, divers and wildlife viewers. There will be music and a variety of food vendors, along with barbecue salmon samples from the BC Salmon Farmers Association. New this year is Jalapeño Grill, and purely for fun, kids can enjoy Bouncerama.

Other participants include the Bee’s Knee, Campbell River Coast Guard Station, Maritime Heritage Centre, Museum at Campbell River, Beaver Aquatics, the City of Campbell River, Quinsam River Hatchery, Comox Strathcona Waste Management, Ecole Phoenix Middle School, Baba Gannouj, Island Return It, Greenways Land Trust, Pacificus Biological Services, Magical Faces, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, St. John Ambulance and Watershed Education.

Oceans Day 2014 marks the first birthday of the opening of Discovery Passage Aquarium, and like all birthdays it will be celebrated with cake! Cake cutting is at noon; so be sure to arrive on time to get your piece. Admission to the Aquarium will be by donation.

There is limited parking at the event, but free Shuttle Bus service is available from the Community Centre, Tyee Plaza and Save-On Foods at 16th Ave. The first bus leaves every half hour from the Pier at 9:30 a.m. to noon, then continues from 1 to 3 p.m. It leaves the Community Centre every half hour at 9:45 to 11:45 a.m., then resumes at 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. Don’t miss this chance to learn about the ocean at our doorstep.
