Bioassay

A Bioassay is an analytical method to determine concentration or potency of a substance by its effect on living cells or tissues or whole organisms. The test is qualitative, not quantitative. It is the measured response of the product. Bioassays are used extensively to assess environmental impact and safety of new technologies and substances.

At BC CAHS we apply a direct bioassay to Lepeoptherius salmonis and Caligus clemensi where several concentrations of the product are tested to produce a measureable response in relation to the dose.  We can do bioassays using Emamectin Benzoate or Paramove 50 (hydrogen peroxide).

The information from a bioassay can provide to fish health experts with an additional tool to help make decisions about treatment with EMB or Paramove throughout the seawater production cycle of salmon. Both treatments contribute to the optimum application of an Integrated Sea Lice Management Strategy.
