Student Opportunities

BC CAHS has established itself as one of the country’s leading aquatic research facilities. We are committed to excellence in discovery, translation, and application of aquatic health research – and to training future scientists.

Trainees have the opportunity to:

  • be on the front lines of scientific study that has the potential to transform the health and welfare of aquatic animals and ecosystems;
  • work alongside scientific thought-leaders in areas related to Fish Health & Welfare, Ecology, Epidemiology, Wild / Farmed Animal Interactions, Stress Physiology, Environmental Monitoring, and Larval Development;
  • be part of a team of international researchers.

Co-operative Education Student Program

Students can gain hands-on research experience related to their field after their second year of undergraduate studies. Students perusing a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in Marine Biology, Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or other fields related to the health and welfare of aquatic organisms can acquire or improve upon valuable laboratory skills. Prospective students can contact their faculty’s Co-op coordinator to learn more about a four or a possible eight month work term.

Graduate Student or Visiting Researcher Opportunity

Graduate students or visiting researchers will have an opportunity to work in a cutting edge facility while completing a Masters or Doctoral degree. Students can work with scientists that have various areas of expertise on fascinating research projects. Students have the opportunity to gain leadership experience in an interdisciplinary setting, preparing them for careers as independent researchers.

Student Volunteer

Once students have obtained upper level high school education they can volunteer their time to explore possible careers and gain scientific knowledge. Prospective students can contact their school career advisor or science teacher to find out if volunteering at BC CAHS would be a possibility for them. The student volunteer position’s availability varies based on season.
